My voice was steady.

“It means you don’t own this house, Dad.”

The dining room went completely still. The only sound was the faint crackle of the fire in the living room.

Dad stared at the paper as if it might dissolve.

“That’s impossible,” he muttered, his voice dropping into an angry, confused register. “The bank… we reached an agreement. We’ve lived here for twenty-five years.”

“You lost the house to foreclosure a year and a half ago,” I said softly. “You hid the final notices until the sheriff’s sale was already scheduled. If I hadn’t intervened, you would have been locked out then, too.”

Mom dropped her fork onto her plate with a sharp clatter. “You’re lying. Your father handled everything.”

“He didn’t,” Nora said calmly, stepping in with quiet authority. “When the bank seized the property, Mara purchased it through Alder Harbor Properties to prevent your eviction. She has been the sole legal owner of this home for eighteen months.”

Dylan stared back and forth between us, his face twisting in disbelief. “You? You bought the house? With what money? You were just a struggling freelancer!”

I looked right at my brother.

“I wasn’t a struggling freelancer, Dylan. I was the cofounder of a successful design firm that you tried to exploit without even knowing what I did for a living.”

Dad stood up so fast his chair screeched against the hardwood floor.

“You tricked us!” he shouted, his face flushing a deep, angry crimson. “You bought our house behind our backs and kept it a secret just so you could lord it over us? What kind of daughter does that?”

“The kind of daughter who spent four years paying your taxes, fixing your furnace, and bailing you out of bankruptcy while you treated her like an afterthought,” I shot back, the control I had maintained all evening finally cracking to let the heat through.

Chloe buried her face in her hands, softly weeping.

Mom looked panicked, her eyes darting toward me. “Mara, please… we’re your family. You can’t be serious about this. Where are we supposed to go?”

I looked at the four of them. For the first time in my life, I didn’t see the authority figures I had spent my youth trying to please. I saw people who had taken everything I gave them and thrown me into the rain when I was no longer convenient.

“You have thirty days,” I said quietly, turning toward the front door. “Just like you gave me.”

Nora packed her briefcase and followed me out.

As I stepped through the front door and walked down the steps into the crisp night air, I didn’t look back. For the first time in four years, the weight was gone.
